Destination Cime Caron - Alt 3200m Suspended above the Alps

WHY GO THERE ?

The view on the Alps

Get out of the cable car and slightly climb the hill in front of you to make the most of this view: a multitude of mythical mountains are in front of you: Mont Blanc, Grande Casse, Jorasses, Peclet or Aiguilles d'Arves. With Val Thorens in the background, which suddenly seems so far away... And yet you are there in maximum 30 minutes of skiing!

Suspended cable car When it was built in 1982 by the French company Poma and with its 150 seats, it was the largest cable car in the world, a feat for the period. Its arrival half suspended in the air, make it an installation considered as one of the most impressive in the world.

Ski in red and black At the top you won't find blue runs, only red and black. You will still be able to take advantage of it by going back down by the Cime Caron cable car or the Orelle cable car by foot.

On the ski side, 2 mythical black runs and a red one perfect for a great getaway:

  • La combe de Caron - piste noire : a 900m ski couloir, located north, under the cables of the cable car. It is certainly one of the most famous slopes of Val Thorens, ideal for challenging skiing. A real paradise when it's powdery, to test also when it's in moguls field to warm up your thighs !

  • La Combe de Rosaël - piste noire : descent on Orelle and the Maurienne Valley. A few turns after the Cime Caron, we switch to another dimension, on a very demanding run, rarely groomed and with more than 1100m of descent. Le Col de l'Audzin - piste rouge : beautiful curves, for a dynamic and long ski : you ski on 1000m of difference in altitude and 4km before joining the chairlift of the Moutière.

TIPS FOR SKIING IN ALTITUDE

SKIING ON THE SLOPES OF THE HIGHEST RESORT IN FRANCE

Don't skimp on layers: dress warmly! Mainly equipped with bubble-free chairlifts (which can't turn when it's windy, which is common in Val Thorens), think about those activity-free rides on the lifts.

Avoid getting cold - little tips that make a big difference: Choose mittens over gloves. The fact that the fingers stay together will keep them warm. Equip yourself with a neck warmer, preferably made of fleece and high enough to cover your neck and cheeks! Socks for skiing, not just city socks. High and reinforced, they will save you from unpleasant moments. On top and bottom, put on technical underwear: merino tights and specific t-shirts for skiing will make the difference.
