February: beautiful snow and fabulous weather make it a perfect – and therefore popular – month for skiing. If you’re visiting in peak weeks but want to experience the mountains in peace and tranquillity, we give you our top tips on how to ski amongst the peaks and forests with just your family and friends for company.
COURCHEVEL LE PRAZ, LA TANIA
Enchanted forests
The mountainside below Courchevel 1850 is clad in a beautiful pine forest, with winding ski slopes that are protected from the wind and offer good visibility on snowy or cloudy days. What’s more, they’re not inundated by the crowds so if you keep your eyes open, with a little luck you could even spot one of the ‘chevreuils’ that make the forest their home!
We Jean-Blanc run :
A classic black piste with excellent snow conditions due to it’s north orientation and minimal traffic. An iconic slope for strong skiers.
COURCHEVEL MORIOND
Quiet & gentle slopes
An endless expanse of white peaks, with undulating, wide slopes bordered by pines and crags… Moriond is home to an enchanting landscape which transports you to the WILD, WILD EAST!
We Chapelets run:
At the far eastern end of the 3 Valleys, this piste has exceptional snow and a picturesque forested setting with a view over the impressive ravines of the Dent du Villard… Escape to the wild landcapes of the East!
LES 3 VALLÉES VIA COL DE LA LOZE
The alternative route
When it seems that everyone is heading for La Saulire, the highest link between Courchevel and Méribel (usually at the start of the week or mid-morning), it’s a great time to get off the beaten track, as the locals do, and head to La Col de la Loze to explore the next valley…
We :
In Courchevel / Heading down to La Tania via the blue runs Arolles and Folyères. Two magical pistes that take a winding trail through the forest…
In Méribel / The easy slopes towards the Altiport, a quiet area where you can ski safely away from the crowds.
MÉRIBEL ROC DE TOUGNE
Back to the wild
This wild terrain in the Méribel Valley is home to two secluded runs which boast excellent snow conditions due to the North-facing aspect.
Not widely explored by the general public, the Roc de Tougne sector has been made more accessible by the installation of a new chairlift, but even so, it remains off the beaten track of most skiers. It’s also THE quickest way to get to the Les Menuires Valley from Méribel and we promise you that the views from the top are truly exceptional!
We Bartavelle run :
Pick a steady line down the upper slope, then take a moment to admire the arolla pines perched on the rocks – so pretty you could be in the beautiful Dolomite mountains! Then it’s time to let loose your racer instinct and fly down the rest of this gorgeous, undulating piste.
MÉRIBEL LE ROC DE FER
Wide open space
A fabulous, uncrowded spot which enjoys sunshine all morning. The varied mountain landscape with rocks, snowy meadows and forests make it a delight for beginner skiers. It’s also a little-known liaison between Méribel and St Martin de Belleville, which makes a lovely detour from this spot.
LES MENUIRES SAINT MARTIN DE BELLEVILLE
A romantic escapade
The ultimate mountain landscape: a panorama of open spaces and ridges overlooking immense snowfields. As far as the eye can see there are white expanses, contoured slopes and rare trees dotted along the river which winds its way below the snow… From Méribel, let yourself glide gently towards St Martin de Belleville or St Marcel, simply enjoying the tranquillity of this meditative mountain vista.
We Jerusalem run:
This south-facing blue run offers a gentle, undulating descent into picturesque St Martin de Belleville.
CHAVIÈRE / VAL THORENS
Glacial exploration
If you are in thrall to high-altitude adventurers, don’t miss your chance to discover the Chavière glacier area in Val Thorens. Observe the moraine from the two successive chairlifts, then arrive at the mountain pass or ‘col’ which feels as though you could be in Chamonix!
At the summit of the Col chairlift, you’ll be able to observe the majestic Chavière glacier. Inspired by the tracks of the freeriders and mountain guides which head into the off-piste, you’ll feel the adrenalin rush of the courageous mountaineer as you pick your line down the Col and Moraine pistes.
